Apple Brings Safari to Windows

Web Design just got a little bit more exciting in the windows world. During Steve Jobs’ keynote for the Apple World Wide Developer’s Conference last Monday June 11, he introduced Apple’s latest port of a mac software to Windows: the Safari Browser.

Joining the other three existing browser platforms in the Windows world (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari), Safari adds to the list of browsers where web designers must test their designs.

Safari offers some browser features not found in other windows browsers. One is the ability to drag a tab (yes, it features tab-browsing too) to become a separate window or to join another set of tabs in another window. You can also merge all tabs in other windows into just one browser window. Safari was one of the first browsers to have a beautiful and pleasing rendering of an RSS feed when it launched with Apple OS X tiger and until now, it’s RSS rendering is still one of the best.

In terms of rendering html and css, it’s important to note that Safari is one of the only few browsers to pass the Acid2 html/CSS compliance test (even firefox 2 and internet explorer fails this test). Safari also brings to Windows its own font-smoothing implementation which is something that should be considered in your typography because it “smoothens” fonts differently than Windows (XP or later).

If you’re a web designer that targets the Safari browser platform in your design, designing in windows just got easier because you can now directly test your design on Safari Windows.
