Web Analytics: Introduction to Sessionisation Methods

Before I discuss the sessionisatio methods used in web analytics let us first define what are sessionization methods and what are they for.
According to the Web Analytics Glossary, sessionisation is the process for creating a session. There are several ways to achieve sessionsation which are all called sessionisation methods. These methods are very important in web analytics because it is through sessionisation that you can keep track of the series of page requests on your website for each individual computer. Keeping track of individual page requests is, in turn, really important since it lets you catch a glimpse of how users are doing while browsing through the site. Some of the things it can tell you are the following:
- It tells you if they backtrack - This indicates difficulty since they might have clicked on the wrong link.
- It tells you if how many pages deep they go - You want to encourage users to go as deep as possible since it means that you have managed to engage their interest. Don’t forget that when designing websites though nested pages are discouraged! Though you want users to go as deep as possible, meaning to the deepest page in your site structure, you should still design the site to have the most accessible structure as possible.
- It can show you areas of your site’s structure that needs improvement - Some pages might be receiving too little traffic or even none at all. This means that you need to restructure your site to encourage traffic to those pages. You can’t automatically say that it is the content that’s the problem with those pages since most never even get to view the page.
- It can give you other information about the user such as location, computer and browser specs, etc.
