Three steps to getting your business to feature prominently on Google Maps

Google Maps is one of the most effective methods to improve the way you interact with your customers. First of all, it enables them to find out exactly where your business is based, which is crucial if you live in a densely populated area. They can access an almost limitless pool of information – from finding the nearest bus stop to your business to figuring out where the nearest café or bar is.

Thanks to the Google Maps feature, users can figure out the easiest way to travel to your business, whether it is via car, public transport or on foot. But first of all, you must ensure that you are listed on the maps. If your business is included in the Yellow Pages or another business database, you may already be featured in Google Maps. If not, you can simply open up a Google account to create your listing.

  1. Get your community talking about you.
The more people in your local area talk about your business and recommend it to others, the more prominently it will be featured on the maps. Publish short videos on YouTube to advertise your business and allow users to make comments. Create a regular blog, publish topical stories related to your industry and keep everyone fully up-to-date with the latest changes in your business like new product offerings or new opening hours. Encourage your customers to review your business by providing them with incentives such as gift vouchers or 'two for one' offers on the next shop. The higher they rate you, the higher Google will rank you on its search engines, which will also help people find you on Google Maps.

  2. Give them the information they need
Google rewards business that contain accurate, detailed information. For example, make sure you update any changes to your opening hours or address as early as possible, and provide useful contact details such as your business phone number, business e-mail address or a simple customer enquiry form. Having a link to your website is also particularly important; if someone expresses an interest in your business but is unable to find a link to your website, they may search for another venue instead.

  3. Report any errors as quickly as possible
If you find any errors in your business listing, report it to Google as soon as possible. Any inaccurate or misleading information such as an incorrect address will only confuse people and could also impact negatively on your search engine rankings, particularly if different sources include different addresses for your company.
